Apple has just released its environmental report for 2013 where the company is highlighting its clean energy use at its offices, stores, and employee initiatives. The report makes note of Apple's use of renewable energy, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and reduction of carbon footprint.

Apple says:

  • That though it consumed 44 percent more energy between 2011 and 2013, it was able to reduce its carbon footprint by 31 percent for the same period
  • 145 U.S. and all of Australia retail stores are powered by renewable energy.
  • All data centers are powered with 100 percent renewable energy, making it reach a 94 percent renewable usage across its campuses and data centers
  • Commute alternative programs for employees reduced emissions by the equivalent of taking 15,000 vehicles off the roads.

Apple is also making environmental strides in its products by eliminating the use of PVC in cables in China and the launch of the Mac Pro uses 74 percent less metals than the prior design.

The company has been making a big push towards increased environmental responsibility this year.

"At Apple, we believe
is about making things better," Apple VP of Environmental Initiatives Lisa Jackson said in her report. "This simple idea drives us to take action in the face of the very real problem of climate change. We feel the responsibility to consider everything we do in order to reduce our impact on the environment."

To continue its environmental journey into 2014, Apple will be looking forward to addressing its carbon footprint with its manufacturing partners. It will also be building its new headquarters, which it says "will be a model of energy efficiency and green building design."
