I have a problem with my computer running Windows XP (Service Pack 2). When

shutting down my computer everything works fine until it says "Windows is

shutting down..." then nothing happens, usually it powers down but now

nothing happens and I need to close down my computer manually with the

on/off-button. I doesn't work to reboot the computer either, the same thing

happens; it gets stuck at the "Windows is shutting down..."-screen.

I tried using a program called CCleaner(registry cleaner) but it didn't

help. Then a found a program here at the Microsoft website called uhpclean

and it seemed to solve the problem but only temporarly, after a few succeded

shut downs the problem came back.

Anyone knows how to solve this?

You need to do some detective work. You have a background program that is not closing on the

shutdown command.

First try the startup tab in MSCONFIG.

uncheck a group of items. Then reboot and try a shutdown.

If successful, recheck them one at a time until you identify the problem program.

if unsuccessful, recheck this group and uncheck another group. repeat the process until you find

the problem.

It will be a lot of work, but most often this works.

The when you find the problem program. Check with the vendor for an update or just don't run that

program in the background.
