Please could somebody help me , I am going demented trying to solve this issue. This is a college related project. I actually uninstalled Server2008 and reinstalled Server2003 thinking it would be easier to solve the problem there. Not so. I can't solve this issue. I know that this is an 08 forum but the solution is the same I am sure.

This is my set up.

Server 2003/8 on my pc, IP address 192.168.1.1.

Windows 7 on my laptop IP address 192.168.1.2. They are connected through a crossover cable. Both firewalls disabled. Laptop can ping server, server can ping laptop.

I added a website in IIS Manager called joe.com. I can right click it and "browse" to it from IIS. I can also open Internet explorer on the server and type in joe.com and the site appears there(only after adding it in the hosts file"192.168.1.1 joe.com". However, I cannot browse to it from the laptop using http//joe.com , but I can browse to the default webpage in IIS by typing in 192.168.1.1 on the laptop.

I don't have DNS or active directory installed on the server.

If anybody takes the time to read this I appreciate it.

Thanks Brian?Schwarz. That did the trick. I can't tell you how grateful I am, it was so frustrating.

I have to admit though I don't really understand what's going on there. Why would I need to manually configure a hosts file on a client? I wouldn't have guessed that in a million years.

Is it because I don't have DNS running on the server?
