Yea you do. No virtual machines have any significant 3D Acceleration

support at this point in time so the only way you can get effects such as

Compiz, or in Vista's case Aero, is by actually running it on the real

hardware.

Look at the figures on the server side. Last year

Linux had a little over 9% of total server

growth. Linux now has a little over 19% of total

server growth.

So that is percentage of total out there not just

Linux sales.

Well if you decide to try again I think I can "Confirm" that 2 drives

may confuse the installer, which is pretty sad when you think about it.

I have one IDE and 2 SATAs (only one in use at the time) and it appeared

to install on the SATA and did no harm to the IDE but comes up with

"File Not Found" on boot.

This of course may be peculiar to the machine in use. Just FYI (oops)

If I may just correct what may be a misconception here the repositories

contain choices as well as system stuff, so, unlike windows update you

can go to the search box in the package installer and search for CAD and

it will list numerous things which mention CAD in their info, this is

actually like Google but with far fewer red herrings.

Not entering a search is also possible, in which case you can click on

categories of software or simply browse a list of ALL.

Note I did not say that all the names make sense :)

Does Grub even start up? If so, what's the error code returned from Grub?

It should show an error number on the screen.

If Grub doesn't start up, then your machine is booting with who knows

what...and that is then the problem.

Oh good, now we are posting in both threads :)

Well yes that could well be it, however booting with nothing except that

IDE drive in the machine shows error 21 from Grub...

Removing that drive and booting from the other drive works fine. With

that drive in the boot says "File not found", not a grub error.

If I install to the SATA drive with the IDE in place it appear to

install correctly but then no matter what I do (Even select boot drive

from BIOS) it is file not found.

Haven't had time to get this exactly figured out

I have found over the years that no matter the Os

it depends on the computer

how it is going to install. Even if they are the

same the install maybe different and

nobody knows why. And you are right.

When I tried for effects running 7.1 live off the CD, Ubuntu downloaded an

nvidia driver, and said I'd get effects after the reboot it requested. This was

no so, of course. During the virtual install, I was never asked to set a Root

password - just a user password. It won't let me be root - I can't enable

VirtualBox extensions. Since during the real install, Ubuntu Install wouldn't

recognize the Promise RAID, I stopped (unvirtualized) Install before it wrote

anything (I hope). Fedora 7 suits me better than Ubuntu 7.1, I think - none of

these drawbacks. Ubuntu stays virtualized, as does olpc:

Just shows you have not seen Linux installed - you go to Add Programs in the

"Start" menu (it's not actually called that) and there is a HUGE list of ALL

the programs that you can install from the Repositories. And when I say

huge, I mean tens of THOUSANDS.....It is VERY VERY unusual that a newbie

would need anything outside that HUGE list.....

I suggest you get a Live CD of the latest Ubuntu and just run it, purely for

Ubuntu doesn't normally let you be root.

It has a similar thing to UAC where if the application needs to run as root

it will just do so after it has prompted for your normal user password.

Its not as secure as other Linux distros but it makes it easier for the

beginer.

(It can be a bit of a drag if you have a lot of things to change so you then

cheat and hack into root and change the files by hand. Just like people

disable UAC.).

You are probably using the wrong tool to do the config but don't ask me

which one you should use as I have not tried.

Ubuntu is a bit patchy on the drivers it includes.. it will work OK on many

machines but isn't worth the bother on others as you can install other

versions of Linux with less hassle, probably due to them being on DVD and

including more drivers.

Re: A foolish statistic

I don't believe I have to give reasons for a personal conviction.

But if you must know, I do not install Linux in any other than a virtual

machine. So far **MY** feeling is that it is just not ready as a true

desktop replacement - and I am allowed to have made this personal

determination, am I not?

So it sounds to me that your IDE drive is your drive that the system is

bootingfrom, am I correct? Since you said you installed to the SATA

drive, it appears that your master boot record is on your IDE drive.

And if you then remove the SATA drive and only keep the IDE drive, you

would get error 21. So far so good, everything makes sense.

It sounds to me, that once you have both the IDE and SATA drive in place

though that the bios absolutely wants to boot from the SATA drive no

matter what and completely ignores the master boot sector on the IDE

drive. That's at least the impression I'm getting from this.
