I am fairly experienced with Windows XP. However, I did some "tweaking" to

improve my system and ended up doing something wrong.

This regards XP Pro, Service Pack 2,

The symptoms are: I can't log into Yahoo or MSN Messenger. Network

Diagnostics tells me it can't establish a connections to http://HTTPS://*

I can get to some https sites in my browser. Network Diagnostics keeps

suggestion it is a firewall problem. But have removed McAfee Security for now

and the Windows Firewall is not configured to keep me from https://anything,

it is at default permissions.

I have been fiddling with permissions on files, and would like to somehow

reset fil permissions and security settings back to the original state, but I

don't know how.

I have two questions:

1. Does the fact that I can't log into msn messenger or yahoo tell anyone

something I might be doing wrong? They worked just fine recently. Web

browsing is most;y problem free: I can log into hotmail, for example.

2. Is there a way to restore all files system permission to their default

val;ues?

I don't have restore points to the time when everything was fine. And I

really prefer not to do a destructive install of XP again.

Does the above description make sense to anyone? Answers, please, if so.

Thanks
