Well you can see from the problems that many people don't even check to see

if they have the drivers they need or if they even exist.

For a quick check you need to do the following at the least, but many don't

as you can see from many of the problems here:-

*Most important* --- *Backup your system.. its time consuming but you should

already be doing it. * But many people don't. 8-(

Check you have all the correct drivers before you start and that the media

is readable on whatever device you plan to use.

Check to see if any application updates are needed and install them.

Check for and uninstall any incompatible software /before/ the upgrade.

Check for and install any BIOS and firmware updates needed.

Don't start an upgrade just before you need to create that important

document your boss wants.

That would probably get rid of most problems but many users still just put

the disk in and select upgrade.

Its like anything.. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Unless you need Vista there is no point in upgrading an existing working

system.

If you are buying a new system then you might buy Vista even if you don't

need the features yet.

I am am quite happy with Vista but I think I would have stuck with XP if the

insurance company had offered the choice when I broke my laptop.

Its not so bad that I am going to dig out my XP pro disk and wipe the

computer but I am not going to spend cash on putting Vista on my other two

windows machines.

Why? Just to have the "newest and shiniest OS?" If your current

operating system is meeting all of your computing needs, there's no real

reason to change your operating system.

Generally a water traveling vessel is called a ship IF it has

sufficient size to carry its own boats. An old sailor saying is "a

boat can fit on a ship, but a ship can't fit on a boat". The only

reason a submarine is commonly called a boat is originally they were

small enough to be carried on a ship since they weren't considered

sturdy enough to travel long distances under their own power at sea.

Size isn't the factor, it is more tradition. Large vessels like those

seen on inland waterways are almost always called boats, yet they are

plenty big enough to carry smaller boats thus based on the above could

be called ships, but they're not. Examples include riverboats or

ferries or even freighters that travel on the Great Lakes or

Mississippi river which can be larger than ocean traveling ships. In

past centuries a vessel wasn't considered a "ship" unless it met a

certain size, usually determined not by it's length but by the number

of masts it had, so a large boat could still be just a boat and not a

ship, yet a small boat with more masts was known as a ship. Go figure.

Does it really matter?

Whenever a new version of *anything* comes out, you always read about

people who are unhappy with it. But realize two things:

1. If you're reading about problems *here*, this where people come

with their problems, not with their successes. You get a very

distorted view of what's going on in the real world here as someone

once said, "hang around a transmission shop and you will think that

all cars have transmission problems."

2. Most problems, by far, that people report here have nothing to do

with defects in the software. They result from people's ignorance,

from bad or inadequate hardware, from bad drivers, from viruses, from

spyware, and so on. And except for very rare situations, they always

get a fix for their problems, and in most cases, that fix is a very

simple one to implement.

Personally, I'm very happy with Vista, and have had no problems with

it. Nevertheless, my view is that you're going about this backward. A

change of operating system should be driven by need, not just because

there is a new version available. Are you having a problem with

Windows XP that you expect Vista to solve? Do you have or expect to

get new hardware or software that is supported in Vista, but not in

XP? Is there some new feature in Vista that you need or yearn for?

Does your job require you have skills in Vista? Are you a computer

hobbyist who enjoys playing with whatever is newest?

If the answer to one or more of those questions is yes (and your

hardware is adequate for Vista), then you should get Vista. Otherwise

most people should stick with what they have. There is *always* a

learning curve and a potential for problems when you take a step as

big as this one, regardless of how wonderful whatever you're

contemplating moving to is. Sooner or later you'll have to upgrade (to

Vista or its successor) because you'll want support for hardware or

software that you can't get in XP, but don't rush it.

If you were contemplating buying a new computer, I would

unhesitatingly recommend Vista, but I think upgrading to anything new

(Vista or anything else) should only be done when there's a compelling

reason to do so.

The "it's moved" thing again? I thought, according to you, any competent
