Thanks, AP. Is it that bad that one should wait for a SP?

Thanks. I understand that the same has been addressed at the time of XP 6

years ago, however, was it this extreme? Were there this many complaints

and issues for XP as there are now for Vista?

The best thing is the littlest, the bread crumb bar .. going up and down the

folder heirarchy is really really easy with it.

Next is is the way you can size thumbnails for various pictures. XP has

thumbnails, but they tend to be small and one must squint. Vista has an

'extra large' size which makes viewing a folder of pictures easier - so you

can determine if a picture has the features you want.

Another good point is that at the left you can have both a folder tree view

and a direct link view.

Also you can cycle through views with a click of the views button - similar

to what one coud do in Windows 98 but was dropped in 2000 and XP - a nice

convenience.

Furthermore, now I don't have experience with this much, but you can tag

your files and pictures for sorting - if you ever needed to it's available

...and you can stack them and so on .. the system is very flexible.

You can even have a preview mode if you want so you can read the contents of

more common types e.g. *.txt or *.docx and it works with videos such as

*.wmv videos.

So, overall, if your work is file intensive, such as working with lots of

webpages or csharp files or whatever, then Vista's implementation of

Explorer is very convenient once you learn it.

I got Vista with a new laptop. I had no choice.

Now my choice is between buying a new printer, buying

XP to replace Vista or waiting for the fix while

moving files to another computer to be printed.

(I can print only the first page of the text).

It's all in your perspective.

I personally don't think Vista is worth a plug nickel as a downgrade from

XP.

I think they totally missed the boat with it.

Many of the people here like the Graphics by Fisher-Price front end and the

Unless you have a real need for something Vista offers that XP doesn't, I

wouldn't bother.

Jupiter's advice is excellent. As to whether there were as many problems, I

think there are more install problems and about the same of the other types.

This was a new method of upgrading and for those it worked for, they

probably have a better system, for those others, like myself, it was a

nightmare that required a clean install.

What features of vista would you like which you don't already have?

There are some universal rules which apply to everything.

I can think of 2 that apply here.

1) The simplest solution is always the best.

2) If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Vista is the last step MS have taken towards the cliff edge. One

more and they're history (OK I'm being VERY optimistic).

You COULD upgrade to 98SE (I am not kidding) but then some of

your newer stuff would not run.

That's nice to see that Vista has seen the innovations that Linux provides

with file managers like Nautilus and Konqueror and has copied some of that

innovation. Microsoft may get it right some day. If it could only copy the

stability and security of Linux along with a better file system, it might

have a decent desktop some day.

Windows are things made out of glass that break easily. Vista is Spanish

for "sight". And, ahem, Nautilus is a submarine of the US Navy,

propelled by nuclear power, not a boat.

You can judge the relative intelligence of a poster by how often they

find it necessary to announce they plonked somebody which to any long

time user of newsgroups is the equivalent of the Bozo holding up a

sign that's reads "Hey world, I'm just an idiot, ignore me."

<How well you should know that. I am sure you have been told that

countless times before mainly from your family, which you choose to

ignore. He is a Not So Bright Albright.>

Redmond's operating systems are not bullet proof. Note, I said

"Windows", not "bullet proof windows".

The word "vista" was imported from the Spanish and can also be

translated as "view". What do you think that "hasta la vista" means?

Another Redmond fan who loves to hurl insults, thinking, lamely, that it

bolsters its argument.

That all depends upon who is sitting behind the wheel and doing the

driving, which you don't seem qualified to drive.>

<Stupid fool, MS Windows is just another O/S like Linux is just another

O/S, a bunch of programs written by Human Beings.>

<But unlike your *boy* Albright, I got that piece of trash Linux, like

the rest of the O/S(s) are pieces of trash written by faliable Human

Beings, on my network. I have also used many other O/S(s) over the

years. But I never fell in *love* with any of them, like you have

fallen in *love* with Linux and started panty dropping about it. <VBG>>

I think that is a feature borrowed from HP (HP will have got it from

elsewhere as they don't write good stuff these days).. I copied a load of

pictures from my old MCE machine which I tagged using the free HP software I

got with my scanner and those tags appear and work exactly the same in

Vista.
