I am currently running XP MCE SP2 without any problems at all. AMD 64bit

3200, 2 GB RAM, nVidia 6600 GT Video, 250 GB SATA HD. Hauppauge tuner card.

Vista upgrade advisor says everything is supported and all device and apps

are fine. My typical work is in SQL Server 2005, VStudio 2005 and Office

2007. I use Media Centre occasionally. I am wondering if it is actually

worth upgrading to Ultimate. I have read about a lot of issues... it

doesn't seem that many peole are very happy with Vista. Any feedback?

I've upgrade many Windows XP computers to Windows Vista.

The users have been absolutely thrilled with the enhanced security,

features and performance found in Vista. I believe you'll also

be quite pleased!

Probably not.

Buying a new machine and getting Vista is different to paying lots of cash

and going through the upgrade process which is time consuming if you do it

properly.

Unless there is a feature you need or you want to play I wouldn't bother.

You have given far to little information for anyone to to help with a

definitive answer.

What does Windows Vista have that you want or need?

The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a good start, but it is not

enough.

For essential hardware and software you should dig a little further.

Check with the manufacturers and see what they have to say about

Windows Vista compatibility.

Check with other users.

Remember it is your computer so it may be necessary to check with

multiple sources for compatibility information.

Many are unhappy with Windows Vista and many are happy with it.

What you see and hear now is similar to what was when Windows XP came

out about 6 years ago.

If you can see no benefit, then you are probably better off not

upgrading at this time.

A new operating system available is not a good enough reason to

upgrade.

Most should not upgrade until newer hardware or software require an

upgrade.

Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years.

Should I have ham and eggs or bacon and eggs?

Only you can make the decision as to whether you should upgrade or not.

I did a fresh install in November and have never looked back. And I am not

going to try to justify my decision to anyone. I just decided I wanted to do

it.

You make the choice.

Vista is a nice package.

I like its implementation of Windows Explorer as I find tranversing folders

[which I do a lot of] easier in Vista. Working with visual media e.g.

pictures is easier too because I can make the thumbnails bigger etc.

I also find the Explorer's "Views" button very convenient .. it's a

throw-back to Windows 98 .. as with it you can cycle through the various

views (icon .. details .. thumbnails) just by clicking the button .. no need

to use a drop-down list (but it is there if you want it) which also is

convenient to say the least.

Also in Explorer, the left-hand side is improved .. so not only is there a

folder tree, there are ready links to common destinations and you can add

your own .. extremely convenient. The breadcrumb bar is uber extremely

convenient. So simple yet so handy .. it speeds up my work big time.

The Start menu is better too .. I use the search to find Windows built-in

programs.

Updating is better with Vista. You can command it to seach for Windows

update *now* and not have to wait for them. It will also do updates for

Office and Visual Studio etc.

There's lots of security improvements too .. probably the most important is

that IE7 runs in Protected mode by default in the Internet Zone. Keep in

mind the security seems a bit quirky at first because the system is guarding

your files .. but one figures it out quick enough and I'm happy that it is

doing so.

So here, Vista has made getting around my file system much easier .. if

your machine is compatible and capable I would recommend it considering my

experience with it. Get either Basic or Ultimate.

You answered your own question. Vista doesn't bring anything new that

even remotely could be called a "must have" kind of feature. On the

other hand you could be giving yourself headaches you don't have now

with UAC, possible driver issues, etc.. I would at least wait until

SP1 is out which will probably be late this year or early next year.

You should upgrade to Linux and fully utilize the excellent hardware

you have.

Running total OpenSource software is really the only way to get the

freedom from proprietary constraints.

Why pay $200 for Vista when you can get Ubuntu for free?

Your hardware will scream with Linux.

If you use those apps as you posted and everything is working fine then I would leave it alone. If it isn't broke then don't fix it. Vista is great and there is a learning curve. With those apps that you describe and using then you are using your system as a work computer. Leave it alone for now. XP is still going to be supported for quite a while yet

Thrilled over UAC nag screens? Don't you think that's putting it on a

bit thick? Note "feature" is tongue in cheek. Really annoyances.

Feature: ===> Calculating time remaining (files may transfer many

times slower. VERY common. Check Google for untold

thousands of reports from all over the globe.

Feature: ===> Lot of the settings/controls you were comfortable

with in XP are now missing/moved or had name changes.

Feature: ===> some JPEG files get corrupted when moving from certain

cameras.

Feature: ===> Unstable USB and SATA interfaces and drives depending

on MB, chipset, BIOS version. Result may not work at

all or only work haphazardly.

Feature: ===> Difficult to set up custom file associations, remove,

now taken out of Explorer and put in Control Panel.

Feature: ===> Many popular Epson, HP printers, scanners, not

supported with vendors stating on their web sites

they have no intention of supplying Vista drivers.

Feature: ===> New highly annoying scroll bar at top of Explorer

which is suppose to show the progress of updating

thumbnails. It is possible under certain conditions

if you Move/add just ONE new file to a already heavy

populated folder Vista will take forever and dumb as

it sounds will redraw all the thumbnails not just

build the new one.

For every user 'absolutely thrilled' I'll bet there are 2 that are

absolutely disgusted over all the new annoyances and for SOME,

slower performance.

Some things NEVER change. Windows Explorer still sucks as a shell. It

still says it encountered an error and needs to shut down way too

often. Media Player still can't play a lot of common file types

without having a hissy fit. Movie Maker is a joke. DVD Maker and

MEPG-2 support totally missing in all but Home Premium and Ultimate

versions.

But... You get 3D icons and a prettier desktop if your system can

support Aero. May need a beefier video card, more RAM to benefit from

it.

Is Vista that bad? No, but it isn't that good either. Typical first

release of any new Windows. Buggy as hell for SOME, probably won't be

stable for most until after SP1.

You're funny. Since you're claiming it, enlighten us on the "proper"

way to do an upgrade. I'm sure everyone is waiting with baited breath.

Thanks everyone. About the only featured I'm interested in at this point

are the flip 3d, aero, new media center and maybe increased performance. I

wont however upgrade if things may get worse.

Flip 3d and Aero aren't really the important features, really, they're just

eye-candy. What I like is when I go to work, Vista makes dealing with all

the various files - jpegs - html files - csharp files (and so on) quicker

and easier.
