After migration to windows 2008, i have a handful of users experiencing network slowness as in they took a long time to access files in this server etc. However when the old server Win2k 3 is plugged in, users have experienced a faster speed. Could it be that the files that they are accessing is still pointing back to the old server?

Yes it is possible. Make sure all the files are moved over and the correct links are made to them.
