Screen Zooms in with External Monitor on Laptop

With Windows XP home: My laptop is powered up and I connect an

external monitor and press F8 (CRT/LCD) to get the video displayed on

the monitor. Open up Word or Excel and the screen zooms to a huge %

number so that arial 10 font fills the screen. Similarly when Mozilla

Firefox is started, the display shrinks to nearly nothing at all. The

same happens on the laptop screen when I disconnect the external

monitor. I have to log off and back on again to get the displays

working properly again.

Any ideas ??
