Posted September 15, 200717 yr This worked for me instantly. All my event sounds came back! The volume button now installs to the system tray, and the play button now works on the sound tab of Sounds and Audio Devices Properties. My problem was: Event sounds quit working, under "Sounds and Audio Devices", on the sound tab, the play button is grayed out and doesn't work. Also the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" doesn't put the icon in the taskbar. All diagnostics seem to check out ok and troubleshooters don't help. Music and video files play ok. Updated driver to no avail. I wonder if this could have happened upon uninstalling a troublesome xvid, and reinstalling a more recent version?
