16-bit applications no longer run on my PC. This includes a part of Adobe

Lightroom (!) that checks periodically for photos to download (apdproxy.exe).

If it is attempted to run a 16-bit application, Windows reports the error:

"NTVDM has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Until recently, 16-bit applications ran OK. I'm not sure what caused this

problem; it may have been installiing Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition,

or it may be that this application uncovered the problem.

I obtained hotfix 890076 from Microsoft and installed it with no errors

reported. Per the associated knowledge base article, the files listed below

are supposed to update, however, only Ntvdim.exe was updated; the rest

retained their original timestamps. (Yes, I applied the registry change.)

06-Jul-2005 23:38 5.1.2600.2715 420,864 Ntvdm.exe

06-Jul-2005 23:41 5.1.2600.2715 30,720 Arpidfix.exe

I'm not sure what to do next. Is this due to one of the files listed above,

something added to the registry... ?? Can I copy files from a PC known to be

OK, and if so, which ones?

The PC in question is an Asus P4P800E mb with Radeon 9600 video with XP

Professional SP2. SP2 was installed recently, but this problem predates the

SP2 installation.
