I did not have the problem you did concerning the Hal.dll. But three times

in the past three years I have encountered the "missing ASMS file" error --

using different XP setup CDs (all legal), and several different kinds of DVD

and CD ROM drives. You ask, "can it be that an installation disk ask for

files it did not put into the CD to begin with ... "?

 

I think the answer to that question is yes. I would be interested to know

what year appears on the Windows setup CD you used, as I suspect the bug

might have been fixed sometime in 2004 or later. I am only interested in the

year if it's a valid Microsoft hologram type CD you used, or a media that

came with an MSDN Subscription, not a copy of one of one of those.

 

Also, please refer to my more lengthy complaint about this problem under the

thread "reinstall failes". If you can't find it, do a search on "asms".
