Failure to Navigate to Device Driver under SYSTEM in Control Panel

When I wanted to check device driver status in the control panel (XP SP2), I

opened System, selected Hardware and then Device Manager. I get a "failure to

navigate error" and then a popup saying that the MS Management Console

encountered a pronlem and will close. The error signature is AppName mmc.exe

AppVer 5.1.2600.2180 ModName devmgr.dll, ModVer 5.1.2600.2180 and Offset

00012a1f. How do I repair this problem?

    What is the exact wording of the "failure to navigate" error you refer to?

     

    What does event viewer show for the error, in its entriety?

    It "looks" like an IE error message in that it says I may not be connected to

    web as one reason for failure. Event viewers items are 7036 with Application

    Management Service entered the stopped state, and 7035 Application

    Managagement Service succesfully sent start control. But error was 7023 -

    Applications Management Service terminated specified module can't be found.

    Click Start>Run, type: MMC

    Click OK.

     

    Does the MMC window open?

     

    If so, click the File menu> Add/Remove Snap-In, then click the Add button on the

    Standalone tab.

    Select Device Manager from the list, then click Add.

    On the next dialog, leave it set to Local Computer, and click

    Finish/Close/OK/whatever.

     

    Does that have any effect?

    Do you have any SQL server running or any other server type on this machine?.

    Also make sure all clean?.
