After bootup and before I get online I get this:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error

Program:...s\compaq connections\1940576\program\backweb-1940576.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way.

I just started getting this error yesterday, have googled and am finding all

kinds of runtime errors but not this one.

thanks

There is no good reason to keep Compaq Connections on your system. Uninstall it,

using Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs, and your problem should cease.

On HP/Compaq systems, I only keep their updating system on for a few weeks when new,

then I uninstall it. I have never seen it provide anything useful when left on

longer.

Make sure Windows Update is set to automatically update.

From HP/Compaq:

<quote>

Updates from HP or Compaq Connections is a messaging service that comes

pre-installed on HP and Compaq desktop computers. The service provides product

notices, support updates, tips, and special offers specifically for your model of HP

or Compaq PC.

If you no longer want to use Updates from HP or Compaq Connections, HP or Compaq

Connections can be uninstalled through Add/Remove programs.

Thanks, I will uninstall, would this have had anything to do with Pogo

freezing?

Pogo freezing? Only if the swamp is cold.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogo

(That was a joke....nevermind)

Seriously, the answer is, well, it could.....but there is usually more involved with

Pogo games freezing. Pogo games are Java games, so any number of Java issues or an

inadequate video driver could be involved also.

Do you know what version or versions of Java you currently have installed? Look in

Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs at all entries named Sun Java, Java, or J2SE

Runtime Environment to find the version and update numbers.

Do you use AOL?

You best bet is to go through Pogo support. First, go to the Pogo main site, click

Help, then view all the Pogo and Tech FAQs regarding your issues. If that does not

help, contact Pogo Support, at the Contact Us link in the Help pages.

Your Compaq has a program that "phones home" and checks for updates. That

program implements a tool called "backweb." Many OEMs customize the backweb

application to provide an update service to their customers. The customized

Compaq program is not working correctly which in turn produces this error

message.

"Not working correctly" may be an actual problem with the application or

Compaq is having trouble server side with their update service. You have

two choices: call Compaq to find out if the problem is temporary or if the

program needs to be fixed (fix would come from them). OR disable the Compaq

program and mark your calendar with reminders to manually check the Compaq

site for updates. Then manually download and install Compaq updates that

are specifically for your Compaq model when they are available.

LOL, yeah got the joke.

Am using Java 6 and use ATT for dialup.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 is now available:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You should install Update 2 if you don't already have it, then uninstall any

previous Update builds and versions.

You can start by following the procedures here:

http://eapogo.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/eapogo.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=pR2A5MFi&p_faqid=10368

Begin by clearing both your browser cache and your Java cache, as described here:

http://eapogo.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/eapogo.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=10990&p_sid=pR2A5MFi

Then follow up with the rest of the procedures that apply to your system.

Beyond that, contact Pogo Support with all pertinent info.
