Hey guys

I currently have Windows XP Home Edition and use a Dell Dimension 5150.

At the moment i have an administrators account and a guest account which

both crop up at start up for you to choose which one you want.

However sometimes when i switch my pc on it gets stuck on 'starting up...' ,

never actually reaching the login phase. However if i restart my PC during

this time, my PC will boot up as normal. It is temperamental, however i don't

really like restarting my PC like this as i'm scared it'll get damaged.

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to fix this or ways i could

figure out what was wrong?

Thanks

One good diagnostic tool/procedure is the System Event Log. Most

activities that Windows does are logged. Events are categorized as

Informational, Warning and Errors. You'd be interested in Warnings

and Errors ( shown as Yellow and Red icons in the log ). It's best to

clear the log entries and then reboot. This allows you to view a boot

sequence and see what if any faults are logged.

To use Event Viewer:

Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]

Select the log in the Left pane and view entries in the Right pane.

Do you regularly do system scans with up to date anti virus and spyware

programs?

Try turning off "Fast User Switching".

It's buggy, and causes problems just as you

describe.

See the Help file for details on how to do this.

yup, had issues with my system a while ago, took it to see an IT person about

it and they reformatted and reinstalled everything. Since then i've kept

virus and anti-spyware running.
