Recently my computer crashed and now it seems it got a lot slower, missing

files here and there. When i checked my hardware devices i found two

processors highlighted. Should there be two processors highlighted or just

one?

Well, how many processors do you have?

What type of crash did yo have? did you try system restore? Do you have

a backup? Details please!

Wow, its a lot more complicated that I thought it was. Well i tried to

maximize my video by going to my settings. After i changed all my video

settings my computer just froze then crashed. I had to reboot and after I

rebooted i lost everything on my desktop, my icons my wallpaper some of my

programs. I tried searching it and then found them in desktop files. i tried

ssytem restore but it says it failed, i tried a month even 3 month before and

same message. I only have a one 2.8 Ghz processor with 1 gig of ram. I didn't

have a backup disc either~ A example is a game I have called Warcraft3. i

tried to run it through C-Drive but says I need to install the disc before i

can play but if i open the program through my computer and program files it

does open. I have no idea what is going on.

Typical windows system...

Try in-place repair. Boot from Windows installation CD, ignore the

first offer to repair, do it the second time, when Windows tells you it

found an operating system, then choose repair. You settings will be

preserved, you will only have to re-run windows updates.

I also have 2 CPU listed in my hardware devices {have only 1 of course and

no problems} so it seems thats OK !!!

That has to do with the CPU you have installed, it's actually one processor, most

likely a Dual Core or Core2 Duo which will be reported as two. The CPU installed

works as if it were two processors even though physically it's only one.

Hi Helpless and Confused,

Chances are, your CPU is an Intel Pentium with Hyperthreading (virtual

multiprocessing technology), as that would show up as 2 CPUs.

Why do you say "of course"? Some people do have two processors.

As a matter of fact, almost certainly *you* have two processors, but

yours are packaged together in what's called a dual core processor.

FYI, System Restore can fail like that if you create a restore point while a

software installation is still incomplete. Best to reboot before you set a

restore point if you just installed something, even if the installer doesn't

prompt you to.

A hyperthreading CPU will show up as 2 processors in both Device manager and

Task Manager.
