Hi,

I'm running two HP Compaq nc6000s that I bought from work. Recently, I've

been getting the following message on both:

The system process 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe' terminated

unexpectedly with status code -1. The system will now shut down and restart.

After that, it pops up a window with the infamous 60 second countdown to

shutdown.

I heard it could be a virus, but I checked with the Norton Sasser tool: no go.

Any ideas?

The tool you ran only checks for one particular virus. I would boot in

safe mode and run several different tools. Do a full system virus scan.

Dump your temp files, browser history, recycle bin etc., a thorough cleanup.

Some tools listed here at Symantec:

http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/security_response/removaltools.jsp?src=symsug_us

The VCleaner tool listed on this page:

http://www.grisoft.com/doc/52/us/crp/0

Copy to the desktop and run it in safe mode using the command console.

Start > Run > type "cmd" (no quotes) > click OK. Type "vcleaner.exe"

(again, no quotes) and press enter.

Try these programs after you get the system running again.

Advanced Windows Care from IObit:

Ad Aware Personal:

OK, ran CCleaner. Then ran vcleaner in safe mode. No viruses. To be sure,

ran Kaspersky's online virus scanner (not in safe mode). Same result.

Ad-Aware didn't pick up anything either.
