Recently my PC keeps losing it connection to the net. When this happens,

websites time out and I am unable to reach the router/modem via the IP

address. I have 2 computers running through the same router (a Netgear 834)

and the other is unaffected by the problem.

If I boot up IE7 after a connection loss (I use Firefox normally), the

Network Diagnostics for Windows XP will kick in, check connectivity, report

a problem and then restore the connection (without having to turn off the

modem etc).

 

Any ideas what the problem is and how I might fix it?

The netgear has the latest firmware and I'm all patched up on Windows.

Are you using DHCP to assign IP's? It sounds like the same IP the second machine

is assigned is being assigned to the first machine. I've seen this happen after a

machine has been turned off or rebooted but mainly to a Static set IP.

is a problem?

Logged into the router and yes, it appears I am.

Starting IP Address is xxx.yyy.000.002

Ending IP Address is xxx.yyy.000.254

 

My router is set to use a Static IP (Supplied by my ISP) rather than a

dynamic one.

It tests network connectivity then reports there is a problem, suggesting I

reboot the modem. I click ok (without rebooting the modem), it retests

network connectivity and informs me it has restored the internet connection

(which it has!)

Those should be 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.254. However since it appears you only

have 2 machines on your LAN you should lower the ending IP to 192.168.0.4, you don't

need the range that's set.

The router should be set to 192.168.0.1, the static IP for your ISP is a different

bird and gets input in a different area. Also, unless your ISP requires that the IP

be set in the router, you don't need it set.

Reading back it appears the connection may be timing out.
