I have Windows XP SP2. The selections for the Firewall are grayed out so I

cannot select disable. I have a router serving the firewall function. What

can I do to disable the firewall?

Thanks.

start/run, type:

services.msc

Turn off the Firewall service, and disable it.

Just to be sure I did it right. It opened up the services window. I

selected "Windows Firewall/ISC". Then I selected "stop" service. It stopped

the firewall.

If that was the right thing to do- thanks!

Yes, and there are options there to set the default behavior on each startup.

Doubleclicking the item in services opens a property page with a "Startup

type" drop box you can set to 'manual' or 'disabled'. Manual should be enough

for you.

What is the diffesrsence between just stopping the service or selecting

manual or disable? Will manual require me to disable with each login? Is

there a reason not to select disable?

Thanks again for your help.

You will get a return of the firewall on the next startup with 'automatic'.

Manual lets other programs start it if needed. Disable lets nothing start it

but you, in services, or with a script.
