is there a way to get win xp updates the old fashion way without putting

more MS software on my machine? If not, is there a work around. I mean, I am

not a MS hater, I appreciate what they offer, I just do not like having

things like that on my machine especially if I can not fully control it.

Thanks much for any assistance you can provide.

Disable auto updates and do it using IE (Tools...)

There's no need to install ' more MS software ' to obtain updates since

it already resides on the system.

Define " old fashioned way ", please.

Is it this ? :

Microsoft Download Center

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?displaylang=en

Or this ? :

How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166

Or do they arrive by snail mail ? <w>

I mean, now when I go to get my updates, it says this:

Get the latest Windows Update software.

We've made improvements to our website. To download the new version of the

software and begin using Windows Update, please click Install Now.

Seems this is a new "service" they are trying to get you involved in. Says

this:

Now you can get updates for Windows, Office and other Microsoft applications

all in one place. Microsoft Update is a new service that brings you all the

features and benefits of Windows Update plus downloads for other Microsoft

applications including Office.

I go about this by clicking my start button and windows update. I just want

it to tell me what is available so I can choose what to download and install

by going through the custom option.

Does that make it more clear? If not, then please let me know. Thanks much.

It either takes me here:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?ln=en-us

Or here:

http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en

You do need to install the new software that's *forced* upon you before you

can use WU in any manner (it's just a new version of the WU engine), but

that is separate from Microsoft Updates, which is entirely optional. At

least, that was the case only a couple of weeks ago.

No, it take you to one or the other. Recommend that you stick with

Windows Update. One must opt into Microsoft Update in order to reach

that site.

From the looks of the first URL, that's the opt in link to MU via the

WU site.

As Gary Terhune has already explained, the Windows Update site now

requires an updated version of the Windows Update Agent due to an issue

with the previous scan detection that was causing systems to lock up.

You can install both of the updates needed to resolve that issue from

these links, if you so choose:

Windows Update Agent 3.0 (x86) [XP, WS2003, Win2K]

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

KB927891

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A&displaylang=en

SAVE the updates, do not run them

When the downloads complete close the browser and any other open programs

Now run WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe [if a message appears that WUA is

already installed, then go here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1071

Scroll down to the May 4th posting to see how to install it with /wuforce]

Then run WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe

Restart the system
