Hello,

On my Windows XP desktop the names below the icons are too short, about 10

characters long. To see the whole icon name I have to click on the icon.

How do I make the names fully visible, able to see the whole file name, on

the desktop?

Thanks,

gmr2468

Use shorter names. The names wrap at some certain point and a max of two

lines show. (Actually, the logic is a bit more complicated than that.) I

know of no way to make the lines wrap longer than they do, or to show more

than two lines.

Gary,

On my friend's laptop they can see 3 lines of text and the whole file name,

so there has to be a setting that can do this.

This can depend on the size of the Display setting that is set in Control Panel\ Display\Settings\Screen Resolution.

The smaller the resolution the more you see . It al depends how far you can set your resolution with what your Video card can support.

Not just resolution. Font size, etc., is also involved. But there is no

*specific* setting that will do what the OP wants without affecting a LOT of

other things.

Like Gary and others have said, you can change some settings , but you will

probably not like the results. The settings that affect this are:

DPI size setting in Control Panel/Display/Settings Tab/Advanced Button.

Select the Custom option in the drop down menu.

Screen Resolution in Display Settings/Settings Tab. A lower screen

resolution is what you want.

Advanced Display settings in Display/Appearance Tab/Advanced Button. In the

Item drop down menu, increase the setting for Icon Spacing (Horizontal) and

(Vertical).

You will need to play with these 3 settings until you get something you can

live with. :)

You can change the amount of space an icon uses, which will allow more

text on a line.

Open Display in the Control Panel. Click on the Appearance tab. Click on

Advanced. In the Item field, find Icon Spacing (Horizontal). It usually

defaults to something like 43; I usually set it to 90 to give more space

for text without giving too much.

You can also set Icon Spacing (Vertical), which will give you more lines

of text under your icon. I have mine set to 50, but this only allows me

two lines of text; depending on other factors (font, resolution) you may

want to set it higher.

There is no way to make the entire name, no matter how long, appear

focusing on it. The original release of Windows 95 worked this way, but

text could get very crowded on screens, so they released a patch that

changed this to the current behavior (more or less).

Try this:

Open Regedit

Expand: HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

Right side, set IconTitleWrap to 0

Restart Windows

Good Luck, Ayush.
