For some unexplained reason Windows installer had stopped working correctly.

I cannot think why

I have tried all the recommended methods and still are not successful. I

have tried reinstalling Windows installer 3.1, but it gets as far as "

checking your system" and then crashes

if I try and install download program ( EXE file) the installation commences

and then when it is approximately halfway through installation it crashes

would reinstalling Windows XP on top of my existing installation correct this?

I would prefer not to but if it would help I'm prepared to do that.

I'm looking forward to some useful replies in anticipation :-)

Error Message: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This

can occur if you are running Windows in safe

mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your

support personnel for assistance.

The above is the message i am now getting after doing all the other things

suggested.

Fortunately I make regular ghost image backups and I restored to a previous

backup [48 hours ago] without success. however, when i restored to an earlier

one [72 hours ago] everything was back to normal and working again. I am

stiull concerend about what may have caused the problem in the first place. I

will remeber to resrore to previous backups before getting uptight again.

Thanks for your response.
