Why can't I get the desktop on top by clicking on it, for example?

Pile of sh*t.

Right Click on the Taskbar, Click on Show the Desktop.

A subjective judgment. Try to open your mind and do some research (Google is

your friend) and/or state your particular issue with WinXP a little more

eloquently.

Keep your emotions in check :)

WinKey+D.

Why are the printed words in a book on a page? Well I haven't seen one

yet where the words hover in the air and don't need paper on which to

print them. The desktop is the base on which the windows open. If

there were no desktop (whether it has a pretty background or is just

black), just atop of what do you think the windows would open? Even DOS

has a desktop. It's called the console (i.e., the black background that

you see).

Since you are too lazy to bother reading even a Dummies book on Windows

or using the included Start -> Help and Support, you really shouldn't

bother with computers. Go back to your ditch digging.

"Go back to your latrine digging." might have been been a better choice

of words!
