My first domain controller when belly up on me and I'm not planning on

trying to fix it. I have a 2nd domain controller that is working fine but

now I need to transfer the OM to this server. Can I assume its ok to just

do this or is there anything else I need to be aware of before doing it.

Also is there anything else I need to consider to do to completely remove

the initial DC form the system?

    If your first DC is dead, you can't transfer FSMO roles - you have to sieze

    them.

    And yes, it's fine to do, as long as your first DC is really dead & you

    aren't bringing it back up. Check out KB 255504

    Thanks, and yes I understand that I need to seize not transfer the FSMO.

     

    Yes the 1st DC is a very old Compaq with failed fans and other hardware

    issues and needs to be removed permanently. If I deem it worth repairing it

    will be brought back online as something different then a DC.

    Another question. Does this need to be done at the commend prompt as

    suggested in the article or can it be done with in Active Directory Users

    and Computers?

    One other question. The server which is to receive the FSMO is currently

    set as a Global Catalog Server. It will be the only DC left in on the

    network after this is done. Do I need to uncheck the Global Catalog option

    before I seize the FSMO?

    You have to use NTDSUTIL in a command line.

    No - you need it to be a GC. In fact, if you had multiple DCs, it would be

    best to have multiple GCs as well.
