Lschaser Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I had to re-install Windows XP. All went well after what I was told to have was a MBR virus. I reinstalled all the drivers (provided by Dell) except for the Intel Graphics 845 driver. My computer detected the hardware, and when I installled it, completely slowed down my system. It wouldnt even let me in Device Managaer to uninstall it. I went into Safe Mode to uninstall it, did that and when I booted back enter normal mode the driver was still there. I barely could use my mouse for anything. What do you suppose could be the problem? and do I really need it? Should I re-install the OS again and just not reinstall the graphics driver (Display Adapter)? Quote

The computer is working fine right now with out that driver. Do I really need it? I also just found out that the person who gave me this computer bought and install the card himself to play games. In other words it didnt come from the manufacturer (Dell). So installing a dell driver might not work? Although when my system detected the graphics hardware (softbio), it gave me the option to extract the files and install the driver. When he gave it to me the computer it was working fine. When I got that virus, could it be that it affected my graphics card? He doesnt think he has the driver for the card either. Quote

phreakwars Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 If it has an aftermarket card in it and your device manager is showing only the intel chipset graphics, then you probably have an Nvidia or an ATI graphics card. The display adapter you are seeing is the one for the onboard video. I really don't see anybody upgrading to an Intel based graphics card. I would think that the "!" point on the driver page is not hurting anything at all and you should leave it alone. To see what graphics you are currently running, right click on the desktop and go to properties, then display settings tab "SETTINGS" and see what it displays as screen 1. . . Quote

Device Manager doesnt even list Display Adapter because I had to uninstall the graphics driver, it was making my computer non-functional. Although before I got a virus, it was working fine. Do you think I should buy another card or use the same one and maybe download the driver from microsoft.com if it's even available? Quote
