Posted June 26, 200519 yr my computer takes about 4 minutes to fully boot up. it gets to the windows screen and sits there for about 3 minutes before continuing. it was taking 1 minute to startup before. also i was wondering if there is some kind of program to analyze computer for conflicts or whatever might be wrong. thanks
June 26, 200519 yr Many factors could be involved here. Typically the usual culprit is TOO MANY PROGRAMS at startup. Just goto the start menu, then> RUN , and type MSCONFIG, goto the STARTUP tab on the right end, and UNCHECK everything... if using WINDOWS 98/ME leave SYSTRAY(system tray) and TASKMON(task monitor) checked. Then do a reboot, you should get a quicker boot. Also, as for checking for probs, use a program called "REGISTRY MECHANIC" its a great program for finding problems, and free to try. '. .
June 26, 200519 yr Author i tried the msconfig & registry mechanic but it still did not help my startup problem. i have used super utilities & tuneup utilities also.. they find several problems with the registry & i hit repair reboot and the problems seem to still be there because i run it again and it finds more problems. i am confused.... thanks
June 27, 200519 yr I'm wondering what kinds of problems it keeps finding... but first, could you please tell me what your Operating system/CPU/Ram configuration is and if possible, the manufacturer of your PC. I don't wanna rule out inadequate hardware just yet till I hear. . .

June 27, 200519 yr There is a documented error about Roxio Easy CD Creator, but it does no harm, I think it was like HKEY_SOFTWARE\MICRO$OFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\SHARED\DLLSHARED THAT REFERED TO A MISSING FILE I used to get the same error myself using Norton Systemworks. If this is the same error your getting, just tell whatever program you used to ignore the problem... Well anyways... we can rule out inadequate hardware, your cpu/mem are just fine, so I would think spy ware and such would be the next step... I mean if you disabled everything on startup, have cleaned the registry, have a fairly decent machine, then the slowdown at startup MUST be caused by 1 a slow old hard drive.... which I doubt is the case, or 2 a software program thats tying up the boot time... how many processes do you have running at boot ?? . .
June 27, 200519 yr Author here is what i can see in msconfig startup. yop yahoo ybrwicon yahoo realsched sndmon norton jusched java nwiz nvidia nvmctray rundll32.exe nerocheck cfgwiz mcupdate mcafee mcagent mcafee ipmon32 sbc ccapp capfax advchk norton 2portalmon 2wire soundman nvcpldaemon msmsgs ctfmon sp2connpatcher mtdacq
June 27, 200519 yr mtdacq.exe is about the only one I see thats pretty useless, but its NOT a threat. My guess would be that its a registry entry startup program. Probably a process running in the background right now. Rightclick on the taskbar and call up the task manager, see how many processes are running and if any of them have odd sounding names. Alot of times spyware/adware can show up on your machine and NOT be detected. If you want, I'll do a remote assist for you and check it out myself, please let me know in advance if you want to try this... It will require you to use an MSN Messenger account. Add phreakwars@hotmail.com to your contact list and make sure you send a message to let me know, otherwise buddy requests get rejected from me. With remote assistance it allows me to take control of your machine as well as see what you are seeing.. much quicker then relaying messages. . .
