Posted March 9, 200519 yr I recently bought Maxtor 3100 portable HD, with USB connectivity and is supposed to be compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0 . It should not need any driver when connected to XP computer. I have 2 computers one notebook and one desktop, both running XP pro. I have no problem using my HD on the notebook which easily recognized my HD when I plug it into one of the 1.1 USB ports. When I plug the HD to the USB port of the desktop (2.0), I get the message " One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it". When I take a look at the USB ports in the device manager, an "unknown device" is listed. Other hardware runs fine when connected to these same USB ports. What can I do?
March 22, 200519 yr I have the same problem as previous member jjo with my maxtor 3100 external drive. How do we get info on fixing it. Ive only just started using it the drive like about 1 month now. I am quite ticked off.
March 22, 200519 yr I am having the same problem. What kind of computer are you having this on ? I have an HP a250n. As a workaround (not ideal) I used a USB 1.1 hub. Jim
March 23, 200519 yr Author Well, I never really solved my problem. The drive still doesn't work on the machine I want it to work on. I emailed Maxtor tech support, and they said it was happening because the first time it was plugged in, there was a driver install error. They said I should remove the driver, wait 10 seconds, and plug the drive back in. I did that. No go. The machine is a pretty high-end BOXX Technologies machine. What's puzzling is that it works on another similar BOXX machine in the office. I've pretty much given up.
March 24, 200519 yr If your drive is still under warranty, call Maxtor. The more people that call them with this problem, the more likely are to fix it. Jim
