PC automatically goes into Power Save mode

I have a PC that randomly goes into power save mode, and cannot be brought back out without a reboot. It is an HP, bought within the last 18 months. This does not appear to happen after any one instance. I can get on The Internet and stay on for a few minutes, or quite a while. I definitely cannot open programs. I have heard of a virus attacking all files with .exe., but I am able to go to IE, and use my dial up connection. I can't run spybot or adaware to completion so I cannot check for spyware. This happens in safe mode as well.

Shutoff power save mode for everything except the monitor. There is a problem with bringing hard drives back from power save mode.
