I'm having problems installing Win 89 on a laptop with a AMD Athlon64 chip, from what i can gather these problems are not uncommon, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance

Since you've obviously spent a bit of money already on getting that 64 chip (and its accompanying hardware), why don't you just fork out a bit more for XP? There shouldn't be any compatibility issues. Plus, you can actually take advantage of 64.

Ahh alas tis not me but a friend, i do not possess the acumen to own such a coveted device, said friend is dead set in the past and has uninstalled xp in favour of 98 and run into issues.
well, if he/she really likes it that much, can't they just switch to the "classic windows" theme? that theme doesn't make it too different from the win98 one

There are many differences between 98 and XP beyond the theme; XP is simply broken for some applications. Also, there is not yet a build of XP that takes advantage of AMD-64 instructions (there is simply a version on the horizon, awaiting the release of Intel's 64-bit chip)
