I have had this problem for quite some time now.Sometimes I boot my computer and I am able to connect to the internet without any problems. Other times I connect, in other words, my DSL WinPoET dialer connects , but when I open my browser it will not find any web sites except the website for my local library. All other sites return the usual cannot find website message. It doesn't matter which browser I use IE, Netscape 7.1, Avant Browser, My IE2, or Mozilla Foxfire, nothing connects.

I have updated my AV definitions and run a full system scan and it comes up clean. I have two spyware programs installed, Ad Aware and Spybot, I update and run these frequently,and they show nothing. I defrag at least once a day and always empty my temp files and delete cookies.

Sometimes I have to re-boot several times before I can successfully view web sites. Sometimes I will run defrag and it will work and sometimes not. There doesn't seem to be any one thing I do that will always work.

Sounds like a DNS problem. WinPOET sometimes doesn't pull the dns server info.

You should consider switching to RASPPPOE or if you use XP use its builtin pppoe software.

I have'nt heard of RASPPOE. Can you give me more info on it and how would I switch?

Thanks for the quick reply

I installed raspppoe and after the reboot, I connected but no websites would open. After another reboot I could open web pages I will monitor this for a few different start ups. If it turns out this wasn't the problem do you have any other ideas?

Have you gone to the Network in Control Panel and check what the components installed are. Should, if you have a Network card, only have 5 things in there. Client for Microsoft Network, dialup adapter, 10/100 eithernet card adapter(they have different names) tcp/ip > dialup adapter and tcp/ip > 10/100 eithernet card. If not network card then only 3 things inside Client for Microsoft Network, dialup adapter, tcp/ip > dialup adapter. First try to jog the Network settings by going into the tcp/ip > adapter properties. Should get window about changing tcp/ip settings say ok then click on the Wins Configuration tab at top and make sure that the wins resolution is disabled. Say ok and then ok to Network box. Should rebuilt drivers for your networking. If this doesn't work delete connection go to Add/remove programs and Click on tab at top in middle Click the communications tab and take check out of Dialup networking and apply and ok. Computer should restart. Go back to Add/remove programs and put dialup networking back and let computer restart. Then go to Network rebuild drivers by adding them Make sure all are there and then check the tcp/ip settings as stated above. Let computer restart then remake connection.

I don't have a Network card. My computer is a laptop. There are 12 items listed in Network in Control Panel:

Client for Microsoft Network

Dial-up Adapter

Dial-up Adapter#2(VPN Support)

Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter

Network of Xircom 10/100 Network+56K Modem PC Card

NDISWAN-> Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter

NDISWAN-> PPP over Ethernet Miniport

PPP over Ethernet Miniport -> PPP over Ethernet Protocol

PPP over Ethernet Protocol ->Network of Xircom 10/100 Network + 56K Modem PC Card

TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter

TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)

TCP/IP -> Network of Xircom 10/100 Network + 56K Modem PC Card

Are you saying I should remove them all except the three you listed in your post?

If you are sure you do not have a network card yes none of those should be there except the 3, I mentioned. You could delete/remove them and let network rebuild drivers to see if that works. Then go from there.

also where do I go from there? if I delete them will I still be able to connect?

Here is what should be in there delete the rest let it rebuild drivers. Might need to uninstall dialer then reinstall after you rebuild drivers.

Client for Microsoft Network

Dial-up Adapter

Network of Xircom 10/100 Network+56K Modem PC Card

TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter

TCP/IP -> Network of Xircom 10/100 Network + 56K Modem PC Card

Just those 5 things.

Good luck

Also remember you MIGHT need your Win98 CD for rebuilding of drivers. Most times though Win98 has the cabs on the computer.
