Networking Computers

Hi

 

I am trying to connect an old PC to my new PC. But i cant seem to get it to work.

 

Both PCs have network cards, they are linked using a cat5 crossover cable. One PC is using XP and the other 98.

 

My new PC accesses the internet via cable (broadband), i was kind of hoping that i could just link the two PCs and hey presto the old PC would get internet access. Obviously, this isnt the case as they would have the same IP address and therefore they will need to be linked via a router to do this.

 

However i would also like to be able to transfer files between them, ie shared drives/folders. I cant seem to find anything in Win98 that allows me to share a folder/drive.

 

Also the biggest thing is, i cant find anyway to see if they are actually seeing each other or not. On my new PC, theres a little icon in the systemtray saying 'Local Area Connection. Speed 10.0 Mbps'. Which would suggest that my new PC can at least see my old one, somehow.

 

Can anyone firstly understand this rambling and secondly help me please?

You have enable netbois in network properties of the 98 box and make sure you have the network components installed. You should be able to share the files from the xp box to the 98 box. You won't be able to share from 98 to xp because 98 can't read ntfs.

To share the connection use ICS in XP. It's in the advanced tab of network properties.

in windows explorer under tools, there's an option to map network drives, selecting that and going through some dialogs will help you find any computers that are on the network.

 

you will need to set sharing access to any drives or folders you want shared be right clicking them and selecting properties, then select the sharing tab. it may be a little different in 98, haven't used it in a long time.

Im a young person and i need help with networking a Windows 98 computer and a Windows XP computer. I dont have alot of computer know how so let me tell you what i have. The thing by my computer that im pretty sure is for networking says this: Linksys Wireless-G Boradband Router with Speedbooster 2.4 GHz. I also have the install disc by the computer that says the same stuff as the machine I told you about before. The XP computer has a Cox Cable internet connection, and thats the main reason Id like to network, as of course I wouldnt like to pay double the regular amount that Cox costs. I basically need you to walk me through, step by step, and Id really appreciate it if youd do it via email because I do not think ill remember I have registered here. I hope you see this soon, or even at all would be good! Im anxious to get the 98 computer up and running with internet.

 

NOTE: ANYONE ELSE THAT CAN WALK ME THROUGH STEP BY STEP ID REALLY ALSO APPRECIATE YOU SENDING ME AN EMAIL DOING SO

 

I just saw a differnet post with your name, Bob, and it seems like you know what youre doing. But, what u said in that post I saw is MUCH to complicated for me, pelase try to be very very simple when you email me Bob, or anyone else who emails me because, like i said, i dont know mucha bout computers.
