An old monitor here at work keeps humming when its first turned on. It doesnt do this all the time, but most times. Its like a high pitch squel. Unfortunately due to budgets we cant get a new one for quite some time.

Does anyone know anything about monitors, and what this could be?

Thanks

how old is it? i'm no excpert with monitors, but i'd say it's nearing it's last days.

if you look on ebay you can find some really cheap grade A/B refurbs for a really good price. i use a refurb myself and it came in excelent condition. also try some local computer shops, they may have some good deals on used monitors.

Nah, dont worry about it. Mine does that, and is just fine. Its because of the voltage going through it. This can also occur when the power is on, but the computer is not (monitor is getting power but no signal). This causes it to squeal as well.

All monitors emit some kind of hum or squeal, but is generally unnoticeable. Some are louder than others (like my monitor im on right now), and people with good hearing can pick it up easier.

Usually, its not a problem. But it could be a sign that your monitor is on the way out.

does the monitor just hum when it's initially turned on? or does it continue humming for a reasonable period of time after warming up?

if it just hums after its just been turned on, that should be fine, but if it does it for any really noticeable period of time, it's likely to be going bad. especially if this is something it has just started to do.

Nah, i just wanted to know, if its something easily fixable.

IE: lid off, play around with a wire and hey presto it works.

not a good idea to pop the seal on your monitor. lots of voltage in there.

i'd only suggest getting a new one, or taking it to a proffesional.
