cool_jini Posted January 31, 2004 Posted January 31, 2004 Hi, I just built a new P4 system. I am no expert, I have built 2 systems in the past ( none of them P4 though). Here's the specs. Abit IC7-Max3 MO - new P4 2.8ghz, fsb 800mhz - new corsair xms ddr pc3200 (2 x 512mb) -new PowerColor Radeon 9700pro AGP 8x card (128mb DDR) - new WD 60GB hdd - has winxp pro running (pulled it out of my older system) Ultra 500w power supply - new Chaintech dragon case - new Floppy drive - old Sony DVD+/-RW - new I started by hooking up the power supply to the case. I hooked up the processor onto the mo and put the heatsink fan that came with the processor on top of it. Had no problems, the processor sat into the slot without and pressure ). Then I placed the mem on the slots ( put it in the alternate slots as specified in the user's manual). There were 2 power sockets on the MO (20 pin and a 4 pin. Since I wasn't sure which one was needed, I connected them both. The case has wires for connecting the power button, reset button and led's to the MO. I connected that too but I wasn't sure about the polarity. Each conneting wire had an arrow on one side, I assumed it to be the +ve side and connected it likewise onto the MO. After all the connections were made, I hooked up the system to the monitor, KB and mouse and power cord and turned it on. Nothing happens. Nothing at all. Even the power supply fans don't go on. Only 1 led on the MO gets lit. This led according to the manual indicated that the system power is on. There is another led next to it that never lit and it is supposed to tell if the power supply is connected to the power source ( whatever that means). I tried changing the polarity of the power switch connector. Still nothing. Only 1 led lit. Long story short, I have spent a grand on this stuff, and I do not no what the problem is. Please help me if anybody can. My dealer newegg.com will not refund me the money for the processor if not returned within 7 days so I am in a tight spot here. Quote
FPCH Admin AWS Posted January 31, 2004 FPCH Admin Posted January 31, 2004 If the fans don't spin then the power supply is bad or you forgot to turn on the switch on the back of the power supply. I don't think you have a bad processor or any bad components. The fact that the fan on the PS doesn't spin tells me it's a power supply problem. Quote Off Topic Forum - Unlike the Rest

I don't think you have a bad processor or any bad components. The fact that the fan on the PS doesn't spin tells me it's a power supply problem. Thank you, it might be that. I have turned on the power supply button. Switched it both ways a couple of times. Even removed the power cord and plugged it in again. Still the same thing. Is there any way to check if the power supply is bad? I do not have any alternate power supplies except the one in my older machine, but that was a 240W PS used for a P2 processor. I don't know if that will be compatible with this new MO. Quote
FPCH Admin AWS Posted January 31, 2004 FPCH Admin Posted January 31, 2004 I've just built a p4 3.0 and it has a 240 watt ps. You could try it to see if it powers up the new system. If you have a volt meter you can check the power supply with it. If you don't, discoonect everything except the main power plug and one case fan. If the the fan spins up then plug one thing at a time. If it doesn't power up after you plug something in then that part is the problem. It could be that the power supply can't power everything. SuBX3r0 Posted January 31, 2004 Posted January 31, 2004 did you double check all the cables that plug into the mobo from the case? those things are a pain, and it's easy to fudge one up. also, try hitting the reset button on your powwer strip a few times. sometimes mine will refuse to turn on, and hitting reset and/or turning the power strip on and off will get things running again. cool_jini Posted January 31, 2004 Author Posted January 31, 2004 Ok, I think I will try this part Bob. I was thinking about doing it but then I wasn't too sure about the compatibility so I didn't wan't to risk damaging something. I can't check it till this evening though as I have to be in class. I was also thinking of grabbing a new PS from Circuit City. In case that works then I can always return it and have mine replaced. I plugged the system directly into the power socket in the wall so the power strip can't play any games, but thanks. Quote
