I need help, and fast. This has happened to me only once before, and I have no idea how I fixed it. I seem to have problems with my disk subsystem, or networking, or the OS in general. I get two different errors under the Event Viewer:

Source: ftdisk

EventID: 50

"{Lost Delayed-Write Data} The system was attempting to transfer file data from buffers to \Device\HarddiskVolume1. The write operation failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file. "

and

Source: Disk

EventID: 51

"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation. "

I get many Disk errors, and then on or two Ftdisk errors everyonce in a while. Its not serious right now, but last time it happened, it got serious very fast.

I'm running it through a battery of analysis tests. Ill let you know if the HDD analysis boot disk shows anything, and if Chkdsk shows anything either.

Thanks, appreciate the help

EDIT:

BTW, Im not running any raids or SCSI drives.

Chkdsk didnt show anything unusal (fixed bad sectors each time, but didnt seem to fix anything). Defragged for the heck of it, didnt help. Disabled write-caching, didnt help. Fiddled with registry options, didnt help. Disabled the VMWare computer running, didnt help. Re-wired the drive so that it was on its own molex cable. Swapped out the IDE cable for a brand new one. Made sure it was seated properly in the slots.

SMART check on the disk says its fine.

Nothing worked so far.

I had a very very mild FSB overclock. I brought it down to normal. Also brought down any memory overclocking as well. I've read and worked through every article on the net about this error. None seem to have worked.

It only happens when I move about large amounts of data (such as downloading an ISO file). Everyone I've talked to has said that this happened to them right before their drive died.

If the OC doesnt fix it, and no one else ha any ideas, I'm going to request a RMA, my warranty is still good. Which is unfortunate. Its a fairly new drive, as far as hard drives go.

I'm going to second the general consensus that the drive is near death. I've lost several drives after stuff like this, sectors randomly going bad and then seeming good again (every deep scan found the bad spots in a different place). Consider yourself lucky that the badness didn't happen in the middle of some system files (About half of my drives that died had the VXD files all go bad at once). Good luck with the new drive :)

Well, its pretty safe to say it was the old drive (notice the was) :)

I was working friday night when the drive (admist a flurry of errors) *turned* off. Yup, just turned off, then back on. I killed power, and left the thing sitting till today.

I went out and got a 80gb Samsung drive for fairly cheap, as I cant wait for the RMA to show up (sched. for wed.). Too much to do. Cloning the drive was a headache. Norton Ghost would not clone it because of bad sectors. I did yet another thorough drive scan (taking up easily a hour and a half), finding a ton of bad sectors and clusters. Aftwards, Ghost let me clone, which took 40 minutes. And now here I am! Working perfectly!

I'm getting the same problem, but a little different.

So I'm transferring data from my internal to my external hardrive (USB), and it does this fine for JPGs and small video, but then when I try to transfer over 2.7GB, if gives me a Delayed Write Failure.

I have a drive in my file server that, a few weeks ago, wouldn't let me copy and paste off of the drive. I was getting a "Cyclic Redundancy Check" error or something. I bet this means the same thing? Drive is almost done?

We are getting the 'delayed write' failure, writing from a W2k pc onto a 250mb USB SanDisk. The failure occurs when writing JPGs, typically when we try to copy several -- although it has sometimes happened with only one file being copied.

The SanDisk should be good -- because it is new (just replaced from the manufacturer). -- and because we have another PC, also running W2k, and it does not have the error. (Large numbers of JPGs can also be successfully written from the Mac,) So we really don't think the problem lies in the SanDisk.

Each of the W2K systems have (at least) SP4 applied.

Any ideas??

This very well could be a problem with the motherboard chipset.

Does the computer giving you the problem have a Via chipset?

Yes, my chipset is a VIA. I'm thinking its either my motherboard, or my OS (Win2k prof). I am considering doing a reinstall of Win2K soon.

See, the RMA drive that I got doesnt work either. I put it in, and within the next day or so I was getting Delayed write failures out the wazoo. Then I started BSODing.

I've been busy, so havent had time to work on it. I just pulled the power plug and the IDE cable, and left it sitting in my case. Gonna try some stuff this weekend. Firstly, I have an old CD-Rom drive I'm taking out (have a burner in addition to it, so dont really need it). Then I'm going to put each harddrive on one IDE chain, the CD on the other. If that doesnt work, I'm going to give each HDD its own chain, and put the CD on the 'good' HDD chain.

In addition to that, I'm going to boot into DOS from a floppy and do a low level format on the drive. I've always had problems doing formats from Windows, they never seem to go quite right (even when using PartitionMagic).

WIsh me luck :)

hey - newbie here

I recently had bought a Seagate 160gig Xternal HD and at first i thought i was having a problem with the HD but my replacment got here and im getting the same problems.

I get the "Delayed Write Failed" error message when i try to use Firewire - i get a system freeze when i try to use USB 2.0 and nothing bad happens when i use USB 1 -

Anyone know what i can do or at least try to do to help remedy this problem?

Write cache is disabled so i know thats not the problem. No conflicts or anything are the cause either im sure.

maybe its something simple i can do to fix this problem that im missing?

Seagates tech support isnt helping me much or at all, they just keep telling me to get the warranty info and try to get a replacement again.

Any info is much appreciated and thanx in advance :)

If your motherboard is using a Via chipset then update to the latest version of drivers and it should fix the problem.

not using a VIA chipset (at least im pretty sure im not)

any other possible solution? :D

While I was researching this I found 2 possible solutions. One is to increase the pagefile and if possible to move it to another partition and to shutoff drive cache features. This one will more than likely work. Some people with the external firewire problem said it cleared up the problems.

The other was that this affected motherboards that used the Via chipset. Since you don't have a Via chipset then that is out.

that was the first thing i had went to try - disabling the cache - but by default it was already set to disabled.

how would i go about increasing the pagefile/another partition - or is the PF increased with the disabling of the cache.

To increase PF:

Right click My Computer > Advanced tab > First settings button > Advanced tab > last option is to change PF size and choose which partition to put it on.

Thanx for the info - ill give a try

Well, i definitly appreciate the info and help. I set the size for PF on the drive and behold it worked..... only once - I sent over a folder with 4 videos about 489megs and it went over smoothly - but after that everything went back to shit - USB freezes again - Tried firewire and it worked once also - since then everything gets delayed write failed even with one small file.

plus anytime i turn on the HD and open the HD folder explorer.exe uses al lthe CPU power and i cant do anything unless i shut it off.

I think Seagate just isnt 'compatible' with my PC -

Anyone interested in buying this from me?

160gig xternal for 280$ yep thats how much i paid for it and i cant get my money back :)
