Need help reinstalling Win 8

I've been having probs with this OS on my lappy for some time, cannot use app store any more and lately the system has been unbearably slow. I tried to refresh today but it failed, so I saved all my data then tried to reinstall and again it failed. I don't have any disks to run the OS from and reformat the partition so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where the files are located on the drive and how to load them onto a thumb drive so I can wipe the HDD by attaching it to my desktop then do a clean install. Any other suggestions on how to get around this also welcome!
