Help me to solve the problem of updating PC from viruses and spyware

I have been using Microsoft security essentials since 2 years . now my computer is facing problem since last month, every week it says , "virus and spyware definitions are out of date" and it also gives the message that "your PC isn't using the latest updates against potential threats and could be at risk". moreover some empty and locked folders are automatically created in my computer D drive. I re-installed Microsoft security essentials and tried to update manually but it takes so long to update. and now it is not updating any more. I have searched a lot for solution and from Malware Protection Center page I found that either I should Manually download the latest updates or download Network Inspection System updates. kindly suggest me what should I do? I shall be thankful to you
