Hi all,

I'm trying to help a friend who seems to have got himself infected with something.

It's an HP desktop PC - running windows 7 home premium. Protected by a paid up subscription to Norton 360.

He's behind a BTHomeHub router/firewall.

Symptoms (when in Safe Mode with Networking or normal start up):

  • Can't connect to windows update
  • Can't connect to www.grc.com (was going to check for open ports)
  • Can't get to download page for MS Security Essentials.
  • Other web sites (bing/google/Microsoft.com) are accessible

It feels like something is hooking into the web requests and making them fail. So if this happening even in safe mode with networking, windows must be compromised right?

My advice to him so far - backup your data and lets get ready to wipe this thing and rebuild from HP recovery tool?

Anyone got any suggestions of other stuff to try - or seen something like this?

Thanks

Martin
