goude Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Hello everyone Could anyone please help me understand the difference between Hyper-V and SCVMM? I am the systems engineer of a small college and being mainly a Linux environment, windows user profiles are becoming a problem. For that reason we are planning to get a Windows Server that will run 4 virtual machines. VM1= for Windows Server 2008 VM2= for an SQL Server VM3= for Sharepoint VM4= maybe a print server In order to manage these VMs I was looking at Microsoft's Hyper-V and SCVMM but I find it difficult to understand the difference. Could you please advise on what would be best for my case? Many thanks Quote
ICTCity Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Hi, You could consider XenServer from citrix which is free (with some limitation). Anyway, Hyper-v is the "program" to virtualize VMs, SCVMM is more something to manage many VMs spread on your network and also to monitor clouding services and so on. Basically I think this is the main difference. Quote -------------------------------------------------------- Tu peux aussi crire en franais. Du kannst auch auf Deutsch schreiben. goude Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 Thanks a lot ICTCity. I understand now. Having a non-english mother-tongue, I got confused with Microsoft's description on their website. Quote

goude Posted October 28, 2011 Author Posted October 28, 2011 Greek. I am looking into getting an 8core server and split it into 4 virtual machines using Hyper-V. Citrix was considered but I've heard that VM's crash for no reason quite regularly so I thought not to bother with it. One is going to run Windows server 2008 One will be for Sharepoint One for SQL And the fourth one maybe a print server. Dealing mainly with Linux OS, I have quite a lot of learning to do before and after setting this server up. :wallbash: and also that is the reason I registered with this forum because I will be needing help  If you have any books to recommend, please let me know. I am thinking to get "Mastering Active Directory 2008" because active directory is the main reason we are getting a windows server 2008. Quote
ICTCity Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I don't speak Greek... But I was curious :) I've installed xenserver many times but I never heard about "random crash". Be sure to plan the storage, trust me, this is the most important part. Regarding books, don't waste your time with specific topic. I read that book and... Yeah it rules but actually in real world is useless. Buy mastering windows server, you can learn more :) 1 Quote -------------------------------------------------------- Tu peux aussi crire en franais. Du kannst auch auf Deutsch schreiben.
