I have recently (June 2014) purchased a brand new Ipod Classic 7G 160GB Model A1238.

Whenever I connect via a USB port to a PC running XP SP3 and Itunes V10.0.7.2 it is always treated as though it is a new connection i.e. "Found New Hardware". After trying to install the device it then states "Cannot Install This Hardware" and "There was a problem installing this hardware: Apple iPod USB Device.

I also have a 2009 16GB Ipod Nano 4G Model 1285 and this is recognised by the PC every time it is connected via the same USB port.

I have successfully connected the Ipod Classic 7G to a laptop running Vista and Itunes V10.0.7.2 where the Ipod was recognised and installed.

Even though the PC states that there is a problem installing the Ipod it still appears in Itunes and I can download music to it and disconnect using the safe disconnect mode.

XP SP3 PC - Ipod Classic

I have looked at "Device Manager" and under "Disk Drives" the Ipod Classic is listed as an "Apple Ipod USB Device" but has a exclanation mark against it.

Right clicking on the "Apple Ipod USB Device" properties and tab "Volumes" it shows the disk with the correct name and data size, clicking on the properties tab "Driver" it lists the Driver Provider as "Unknown", Driver Date and Driver Version as "Not Available". Clicking on the Properties "Driver Details" it shows one driver file -

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\PartMgr.sys, File Version 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp080413-2108).

Under the "Device Manager" USB Controllers there is an entry for "Apple Mobile Devices USB Driver" and a "USb Mass Storage Device"

The "Apple Mobile Devices USB Driver" lists two Drivers:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\usbaapl.sys and

C:\WINDOWS\System32\usbaaplrc.sys

The "USB Mass Storage Device" lists one Driver:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\USBSTOR.SYS

XP SP3 PC - Ipod Nano

I have repeated the above steps with the Ipod Nano connected to the PC and the Driver Provider is shown as Microsoft with the Driver Date as 01/07/01 and the Driver Version as 5.1.2535.0.

In the Properties "Driver Details" it shows TWO driver files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys AND the above

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\PartMgr.sys.

Both with the File Version 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp080413-2108).

The "Apple Mobile Devices USB Driver" and "USB Mass Storage Device" are the same as for the Ipod Classic.

I have followed the Itunes removal procedure and even updated Itunes to V11.2.2 to no avail.

As far as I'm aware the system is as up to date as XP can now be.

So, why does Windows not install the Ipod Classic and why is the disk.sys Driver not shown

under the Driver Details?

Is the 7G Ipod Classic not compatabile with XP SP3?
