Windows 8 freezes when windows 8.1 upgrade is offered

Microsoft barges onto my computer once in a while to offer me an upgrade to 8.1. Having read reviews I do not believe it is a useful upgrade for me and I don't want to spend days re-installing 3rd party software. I always reject the offer. But once in a while my computer freezes as soon as the offer appears. I have the little spinning WAIT circle spinning and I can do nothing else on the computer. There seems to be no way to make it go away short of rebooting or logging out. Is there a way to prevent this from getting this offer in the first place or an easy way to undo this freeze?
