Windows 8, cannot get past 'Failed to configure Windows updates' screen

Hello,

I have a brand new Windows 8 laptop on which I have just installed many updates. The laptop is now permanently stuck on a 'Failed to configure Windows updates. Reverting changes' screen. The solutions I've found online involve doing things once the computer has booted up, which obviously I can't do. Or they involve booting up in Safe Mode. I've tried all sorts of combinations of pressing F8, Fn+F8, Shift+F8, Shift+Fn+F8 at different times but I can't get the advanced start up menu up at all. How can I get past this stuck screen so that I can actually use my computer?
