Why won't my touchscreen pen won't work with my screen?

So I have an hp pavilion windows 8 laptop, it is touchscreen and my first laptop. I don't know much about computers but I love this one. Now my problem is that whenever I try to use touchscreen pens I have, they don't work. Why wont the pens work with this computer? I do alot of drawing and I can't get what I want from my art without using a pen. Thank you to any one that can help me!
