Can't save user resolution.

After a nasty virus, my resolution settings would not be saved. Also, Windows Update automatic wouldn't work. Cleaned comp and fixed update. Now, resolution will be saved, but only when the laptop is plugged in. Yeah, wierdorama, but I've tried it, and it's true. My question is, could a virus affect a power program? I'll sit down and wait for my answer. Thanx
