Windows 8 audio device suddenly unusable... WHAT?

So I have a problem. Upon recently installing an optional update, my laptop's audio device became inaccessible.

 

 

There are no sounds, I cant even test the speakers. Here is an error message that pops up when I try to test.

This happens when the computer sleeps or when the screen turns off.

 

 

Sometimes randomly.

 

 

can anyone help? I have tried reinstalling the device drivers and still the problem persists
