How do I get Windows Defender to run on my new 8.1 machine?

I just got a new Dell Inspiron with Windows 8.1. It came with McAfee preinstalled. I did not, and do not want McAfee. I would prefer to use Windows Defender. I found the application and attempted to launch it but was informed that I had another program running that would allow it to start, I assume it is McAfee. I was going to remove McAfee but was hesitetant to leave my system open and unprotected in the event Defender still failed to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
