Mother's computer freezes shortly after starting full scan

My mother has windows 7. Shorty after starting a full scan (around file 80,000) the scan starts to slow way down. It goes so slow that it will take several hours to get to file 84,000. Shortly after, it freezes all together. I know she probably has a virus or mal-ware causing this but have no idea how to fix the computer. What do I do?
