Posted June 5, 201410 yr I have had Publisher 97 for a number of years and have learnt to live with it. Actually I love it! I got Window 7 recently and put this on it and it works ok but on my XP machine it has a problem that relates to publisher not closing properly. When a .pub file is re-opened I get the "The file is being used by another running instance of Publisher. Try closing other instance or saving your work in those instances; then try again." . I have seen other with the same problem. For a long time I had no solution to getting out of this problem. Then one day I used the Ctrl + Alt and Delete to get Task Manager running, I looked down the list of programs and found several MSPUB.exe running. And one by one I ended the program MSPUB.exe and was then able to re-open the file I wanted. So the question is Why is the program not closing down the file properly? I have un-installed Publisher and reinstalled it but it makes no difference. Furthermore I have also noticed that on just one task while I publisher I get a stalled situation.......meaning that old egg-timer symbol ..........This is when I try to fill a box with colour. Again I used the Ctrl + Alt and Delete to get Task Manager which broke the that old egg-timer symbol and I was then allowed to chose a colour and continue with my work. 2nd Question is Why is this stalling process happening? Clearly there is something not right and there seems to be no permanent fix other than Ctrl + Alt and Delete to get Task Manager running I see there is talk about one of the updates that threw Publisher out of kilter and even a Mr Fix download thing but apparently this is not for my version on XP Any help would be appreciated before I wear out the Ctrl + Alt and Delete keys !!
