Can you please confirm if Microsoft Defender is Anti Virus tool as well as Anti Spyware for...

Sorry if I am bringing up the subject again.

 

I have Windows 8.1 (64bit)

 

I have Defender installed.

 

My Action Center says that Defender is supporting both Anti Virus AND Anti Spyware.

 

However, some threads I have seen, albeit old ones admittedly, suggest Defender is only an anti spyware tool

 

Can you please confirm if Defender is also an anti virus tool for users running 8.1 OS?

 

If not then should I download another Anti Virus tool, such as Security Essentials?

 

The reason I am looking at this is because of the recent UK national news stories calling on users to check their anti virus and OS updates are up to date.

 

If you can confirm that Microsoft Defender does perform full anti virus and anti spyware support, then I will breathe easier.
