Why is my defragment option no longer available on Windows XP?!?

Hi all,

Basically, I was defragging my hard drive (C:) several days ago and the electricity supply was suddenly cut off half way though. Since then, I have repeatedly tried to use the application and I keep receiving a message saying:

MMC cannot open the file. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

Firstly, I AM the administrator for my computer.

Second, I have tried a suggested method via:

a) Clicking START and then RUN;

b) Typing C:\Windows\Inf and clicking OK;

c) Right-clicking the dfrg file (because dfgr.inf is not in the displayed menu !?!);

d) Then finally clicking INSTALL.

The Defragment icon is still displayed in the Start Menu/Accessories/System tools and yet, NOTHING seems to have changed! Hence, the same message (as above) appears!

Can anyone help me, or possibly shed any light on what may have happened and if I can possibly recover it?

Many Thanks,

Bruce.
